Spy Valley Wines Appoints Long-Serving Team Member Adam McCone as General Manager
Spy Valley Wines is delighted to announce the promotion of Adam McCone to General Manager, recognising his 25 years of commitment to the family-owned Marlborough winery. Having joined the business on 5 November 2001, Adam has been part of an extraordinary chapter in Spy Valley’s history - witnessing the winery’s growth, the evolution of the New Zealand wine industry and the many changes that come with building a family business across generations.
Over that time, Adam has become much more than a long-serving member of the team. He has been part of the Johnson family’s journey. From the pressures and unpredictability of vintage to the everyday challenges of running a winery, Adam has seen just about everything Spy Valley can throw at him - and has remained a trusted and valued part of the team throughout. His promotion recognises not only his experience and operational knowledge, but also the relationships, loyalty and institutional knowledge he brings to the role.
Managing Director Amanda Johnson will increasingly focus on strengthening Spy Valley’s presence in key markets, developing customer and distributor relationships, and sharing the story of the Johnson family and its wines internationally. With Adam taking the lead on day-to-day operations, Amanda will have greater scope to represent the business in market, champion the brand and pursue new growth opportunities.
“Adam has been part of the Spy Valley family legacy for 25 years, so there are very few chapters of our story that he hasn’t been part of,” says Amanda Johnson. “He’s seen our business grow and change, watched my children grow up around the vineyard, and, in more recent years, helping bring the next generation of Johnson grandchildren through their paces and help keep them on their toes! He knows our people, our vineyards, our wines and our business inside out, and his contribution over the years has been enormous.”
“This appointment is a natural next step and one I’m absolutely delighted about. Adam will lead the operational side of the business, while I spend more time in our markets, building relationships, telling our story and creating opportunities for the future. We’re a family-owned business, and our success has always been about the people who grow with us. Adam is a wonderful example of that, and I’m excited about what we can achieve together as we continue growing the Spy Valley legacy for the next generation.”
